Yes or No to Michaels?

This hand produced an interesting debate between bidding hearts naturally and immediately showing both red suits with Michaels. While some players preferred describing the strong six-card heart suit first, others felt the offensive nature of the 6–5 distribution made Michaels the more practical action.

As shown in the chart, approximately 53% of the 154 voters chose Michaels, while 38% preferred a natural 2♥ overcall. The remaining votes were split among several alternative actions.
There is clear merit to choosing either bid. A natural 2♥ overcall accurately describes the six-card heart suit while preserving space to introduce diamonds later in the auction. In contrast, a Michaels cue bid immediately communicates a two-suited hand, which can be more effective when partner is short in hearts and better suited to support the minor suits. Additionally, after a Michaels bid, it may still be possible to introduce hearts later in the auction if needed.
Below is the full layout of the hand:

As partner held a short heart, three diamonds, and length in both of North’s suits, it was clear that diamonds was the better offensive strain. With two inevitable losers in the black suits and two diamond losers, 3♦ would likely make with precise play, whereas 3♥ would go down as declarer would be forced to concede two heart tricks.
